Keep Going
2014
As Eddie, 139 years old, is about to fulfill his dream of going to Sun City, a city dedicated to the elderly, his 140-year-old sister Beth shows up. Homeless and without income since the loss of her pension, she moves in with him. The resulting cohabitation is difficult, and interference is rampant. Will Eddie achieve his dream, or will he take care of his sister ? Why is Beth bumping into things more and more ? And what about that strange puddle in the middle of the living room ? Is the shipwreck inevitable ?
Without words and without taboos, Keep Going is a dizzying dive into the murky waters of our old age. Through the two super-centenarian anti-heroes, the audience is taken on an audacious and offbeat fantasy ride.
Our approach aims to center extreme old age in our theater. Around our two characters, Beth and Eddie, we develop a universe where different aspects of aging are highlighted. Indeed, in our story, Beth and Eddie, confronted with the "ageist" rejection of a society no longer able to pay attention to their condition, find themselves left to their own devices. From this forced retreat, a cohabitation will emerge where issues of dependency, loss of freedom, abuse, neglect, and survival will be addressed.
Through these characters, it is primarily our perspective as young adults on this reality that we wish to express. We want to take a long look at our human condition and, in doing so, mourn the loss of dear and legitimate concepts such as independence and freedom. Far from immediacy, short-term thinking, and supposed daily efficiency. We view old age, our old age, as a hoped-for future and, by doing so, oppose the image depicted by a consumerist and ageist society.
Today, as artists, we believe it is urgent to project ourselves into the long term. To dare to think of a future, of duration, but also to work towards a society where every individual, regardless of their age, has a place that is respected and respectable. In short, Keep Going.
